La Graciosa is the largest of the islets that make up the Chinijo Archipelago, with a surface area of 27 km2 and a population of 681 inhabitants (January 2013). Politically, it belongs to the northern municipality of Lanzarote, Teguise.
It is part of the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park and the Los Islotes Integral Reserve. Like the rest of the Canary Islands, its origin is volcanic.
La Graciosa is located near one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, which has been the main source of income for its inhabitants for a long time, although currently tourism has become the most important.
La Graciosa has become a quiet and wild place to get lost, isolate oneself from the outside world, and enjoy nature in its purest form.
On June 26, 2018, the General Commission of the Autonomous Communities of the Senate unanimously approved a motion recognizing La Graciosa as the eighth inhabited island of the Canary Islands. However, this measure does not equate it with the rest of the islands in the archipelago, as La Graciosa will continue to belong to the municipality of Teguise in Lanzarote and will not have its own island council (a necessary political body for its equalization with the rest of the islands in the archipelago).
With this measure, La Graciosa's status will be that of a "pedanía," that is, a smaller local entity with legal personality. It will have its own budget to directly manage the necessary public services for its residents.
Therefore, this measure recognizes La Graciosa as the eighth inhabited island of the Canary archipelago, but it will continue to be considered a minor island dependent on Lanzarote.
