Virgin of Carmen

Virgin of Carmen

The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of La Graciosa, and her feast day is celebrated on July 16. The Virgen del Carmen is the protector of sailors and fishermen, and in La Graciosa, an island primarily dedicated to fishing and navigation, this celebration is very important.

You will find the Church of Our Lady of Carmen in Caleta de Sebo, which was built in 1945. The Virgen del Carmen is also known among the locals (residents of La Graciosa) as the Virgen del Mar. As expected, the church dedicated to the island's patroness features ornamental elements rooted in maritime tradition.

The festivities begin with a maritime procession where the image of the Virgen del Carmen is carried in a procession by decorated fishing boats and sailors from the island. The boats sail around La Graciosa while the island's inhabitants set off firecrackers and rockets. After the procession, the image of the Virgen is paraded through the island's streets, accompanied by music and dancing.

During the festivities, sporting events such as fishing competitions and regattas are organized, along with cultural activities like art exhibitions and concerts. Additionally, on the night of July 16, a mass is held in honor of the Virgen del Carmen at the Church of Our Lady of the Sea.

The Virgen del Carmen festival in La Graciosa is a deeply rooted celebration in the culture and tradition of the island, providing an opportunity for the locals to pay homage to their patroness and for visitors to experience the unique culture and traditions of La Graciosa.
